On June 1, 1967, the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and nothing has been the same since. The Fab Four's eighth studio album became a huge hit, of course, selling more than 32 million copies globally. (A number of 50th anniversary re-issue packages were released last week.) More important was Sgt. Pepper's influence on music and society. With its groundbreaking sound effects, crazy-collage cover and "concept album" production, it inspired musicians from Pink Floyd to Radiohead to Stevie Wonder and helped kick-start the counterculture revolution.
